WHERE IT BEGAN
THE EARLY YEARS

Gary Moorcroft is a fourth generation meat trader and grandson of Fenner Moorcroft, a live stock trader and later owner of the Cradock Abattoir in South Africa.
At the age of 10, Gary had his first experience with air-dried meat snacks on his uncle Bill’s farm where the day’s hunt was cut into suitable pieces of meat and hung along lines spun on the sun porch behind wire netting. The cool, dry and gentle breeze of pure winter air in the Cradock area created the perfect conditions to naturally dry meat snacks.

Gary’s venture into meat snack manufacturing was cemented when he purchased Stormberg Organic in 2007. Founded in 1998, the company supplied air-dried meat snacks by mail order from its first processing plant in Molteno, a small town in the North Eastern Cape of South Africa.

FAQs

What makes Stormberg Foods biltong different from traditional beef jerky?

Biltong and jerky are made differently. Jerky is smoked or baked. Stormberg air-dries the beef using South African methods. No heat, no sugar. The protein holds up better because the meat is never cooked. Taste and texture are noticeably different from anything you find in the jerky aisle.

Do you offer private label and contract manufacturing services?

Stormberg manufactures protein snacks for other brands. Some clients need help developing a recipe from scratch. Others already have a product and need a facility that can keep up with demand. The company does both.

Is your facility USDA-certified and where is it located?

Goldsboro, North Carolina. The facility is USDA-certified, meaning federal inspectors are involved in the process. Not just an internal quality team.

Can I purchase Ayoba or Brooklyn Biltong at wholesale prices for my business?

There is a wholesale application on the Stormberg portal. The company already works with gyms, independent retailers, and grocery chains. Once the account is approved, bulk pricing applies across all brands.

How to Buy Biltong in Bulk USA?

Stormberg Foods, near Goldsboro, N.C. They provide wholesale biltong to businesses across the nation. Gyms buy from them. So do grocery stores and independent shops. There is a wholesale application on their site if you want in. You fill it out, get approved, and volume pricing applies. Not complicated.

How to Choose a Biltong Snack Manufacturer?

Start with USDA certification. That one is not optional. It means federal inspectors don’t just call and take your word for it. Not some in-house team marking its own homework. Then question where the beef comes from. Stormberg only uses American beef. All of it. Every single product. And here’s the thing that too many people never articulate: is the manufacturer able to create a recipe based on what your brand needs, or will they just quote you for some stock product with your name printed on the bag? And that is more important than most buyers understand until it’s too late.

Should you consider selling biltong in bulk?

Short answer: yes. Longer answer: it depends on your channel. Biltong performs well among nutrition label readers. High protein, no sugar. That demographic is not shopping the jerky aisle. They’re in gyms, health food stores, stuff like that. Margins, as compared with jerky, are solid because the retail price point runs high and customers do not object to it. The biltong market in the US is still pretty small relative to jerky, which is honestly part of the opportunity. Less competition on the shelf.
